I've bought whatever seems to fit Goth or Punk comics and read, but I can't say any of the characters would be a superhero.
I liked Serenity Rose from Serenity Rose, Volume 1. She's an early 20s witch and the graphic novel is her diary that she's keeping on the advice of her court-appointed therapist. (When she was a 16, there was a bullying instance and her reaction was to suspend the bus in mid-air. No one got physically hurt, but the courts said she had to see a therapist.) So quite a bit of it is her everyday, withdrawn life.

As for what gets emphasised too much, standardrized test scores that don't translate into real-life applicability and don't encourage love of subject.
