[Error: unknown template qotd]Encouraging a basic love of learning instead of drowning it in horrible school experiences and development of critical thinking and research skills to apply from traditional school subjects to even hobby interests.  As for what gets emphasised too much, standardrized test scores that don't translate into real-life applicability and don't encourage love of subject.

I agree that children are not taught to love learning, nor are they taught in such a way that they can apply it to their own lives.
Reading comprehension is so important and yet I know kids who are in junior high and they are just finding out now that they comprehend very little of what they are reading, Like, little kid comprehension.
