Writer's Block: Dream or Reality?

As soon as the film went back to the conversation with the old man and the main character, except near the end, I heard a collective whuh? and was part of the lost audience members. IOW, I don't feel any need to figure-out what really happened--at all.

I only confuse dreams with reality in the moments I'm actually having the dream.
